Her specialty is teaching Appalachian fiddle music and singing, with an emphasis on ear training, chord progressions, rhythmic structure and the history and theory of old-time music. Ida creates and presents age appropriate, multi-media lessons in the history and theory of old-time music, using a combination of audio samples, historical images, video footage, live demonstrations and hands-on instruction. She has collaborated with visual art and history teachers in creating cross-disciplinary programs that teach American history and culture through the study of folk music.

For demonstrations, performances, teaching larger groups and for groups that include banjo students, Ida often collaborates with her father, master fiddler John Specker, who has a repertoire of over 175 traditional tunes.
